Why do Women Have Labiaplasty?

Why do Women Have Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that involves altering the labia minora (the inner lips) or the labia majora (the outer lips) of the vulva. People may consider labiaplasty for various reasons, including:

1. Cosmetic Concerns: Some individuals may feel self-conscious about the size, shape, or symmetry of their labia. They may seek labiaplasty to reduce the size of the labia minora or majora to achieve a more aesthetically pleasing appearance.

2. Functional Issues: Enlarged or elongated labia can sometimes cause discomfort during physical activities such as exercise, or during sexual intercourse. In such cases, labiaplasty may be performed to alleviate physical discomfort.

3. Psychological Reasons: Feeling unhappy or embarrassed about the appearance of the genital area can affect a person’s self-esteem and body image. For some individuals, undergoing labiaplasty can lead to increased confidence and improved mental well-being.

4. Medical Necessity: In rare cases, congenital conditions or injuries may result in abnormal or painful labia that require surgical intervention for medical reasons.

It’s important to note that deciding to undergo labiaplasty is a personal choice and should involve thorough consideration and consultation with a qualified healthcare provider. Potential risks, benefits, and expected outcomes should be discussed thoroughly before proceeding with any surgical procedure.

At your initial consultation, Dr Sharon Li will discuss your specific concerns and aesthetic goals, and make every effort to ensure your concerns are fully understood. An examination will be performed during this consultation, and please note that you must be aged 18 or over to proceed with this procedure.

Please bring a GP referral, prior to attending your initial consultation, as this allows Dr Li to access information regarding your general health, past medical history, psychiatric history and suitability for the surgery.
