Common gynaecological problems
The below information is to help increase your knowledge and awareness of your health. It is not intended for use in self-diagnosing. This is by no means a comprehensive list, and we recommend contacting our office if you have any questions or concerns.
Abnormal uterine bleeding
If you are experiencing excessive or any unusual bleeding from the uterus through the vagina you may have abnormal uterine bleeding. This can occur during your monthly cycle as well as during your menstrual period.
The most common symptom is bleeding between periods or an unusually a heavy period. Some causes of abnormal uterine bleeding include: certain birth control pills, pregnancy, polpys, and hormone replacement therapy, to name a few. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms and would like more information, please contact Dr Sharon Li’s office today.
Dysmenorrhea (painful periods)
Dysmenorrhea is pain associated with menstruation. Which is one of the most common menstruation disorders with more than half of women having some pain for 1 to 2 days a month. There are two types of dysmenorrhea: primary and secondary.
Each type of dysmenorrhea has slightly different symptoms and causes, with primary dysmenorrhea the symptoms start just before menstruation and eases off as the menstruation continues. Secondary dysmenorrhea can begin a few days before menstruation, and get worse as the menstruation period continues and doesn’t (always) go away after.
If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it’s recommended you contact Dr Sharon Li’s office for a consultation.
Dyspareunia (painful intercourse)
Dyspareunia can be used to describe pain which happens before, during or after sex. This can affect women who are menopausal or have had their ovaries surgically removed. Symptoms include pain during penetration, deep pain while thrusting, burning or aching sensation or throbbing that lasts hours after intercourse.
If you are experiencing any of these symptoms or other sex pain, please contact us today.
Pelvic Pain
Pelvic pain is usually pain (or discomfort) experienced below the navel in the lower abdomen—including the reproductive organs. Reasons for experiencing this pain can include painful ovulation, menstrual cramps and problems such as appendicitis. This problem can range from mild to severe and depends on the root cause of the problem.
The best way to determine what the cause is and how to best fix it is by visiting Dr Sharon Li. Because there are so many different reasons why this can happen, it is better to speak with a specialist who can better diagnose the problem and provide the most suitable treatment.
Endometriosis
Endometriosis is long-lasting (if not lifelong) disorder in which tissue which normally lines the uterus grows outside it. While not considered common (about 10% of women suffer from endometriosis), it can be difficult to diagnose due to lack of understanding. The symptoms of endometriosis often imitate other problems making it difficult to diagnose. In fact, at the moment the only way to definitively diagnose endometriosis is through laparoscopy.
The best way to diagnose this condition is by visiting Dr Sharon Li. If you do have endometriosis, a gynaecologist like Dr Sharon Li will be able to recommend the most suitable treatment for your needs.
